Western Psychological Association Concerence Recap & 2015 Opportunities

This year was a phenomenal one for Psi Beta students! Over 40 students presented their novel research at the 94th Annual Western Psychological Association Conference in Portland, Oregon. During a well-attended poster session, 13 posters of undergraduate research were represented. Psi Beta students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and honed their ability to communicate their findings to a diverse audience. Psi Beta students also had the opportunity to participate in the Chapter Exchange and Social Hour. The Chapter Exchange is an opportunity for students and advisors to meet with other Psi Beta chapters and share experiences. Dr. Kris Lieppen-Christensen also facilitated the presentation of student research in a “Speed Research Presentation” – students could only use one PowerPoint slide and had three minutes to describe their research project. There were some amazing presentations of some scholarly research. My understanding is that many of these Psi Beta students have since submitted their work for various awards and publication in student journals! Hopefully this will inspire additional Psi Beta students to attend and present at a regional conference.

I would like to remind you of the upcoming Western Psychological Association Conference at the Red Rock Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada on April 30th – May 3rd 2015. This is such a great student opportunity, as students can submit their research in the form of an APA style poster, and attend our Chapter Exchange to meet with other Psi Beta students and advisors. The poster submission application for WPA is due on 1/12/15. Please note that application forms were emailed to advisors in the Western and Rocky Mountain Regions. Please contact me if you did not receive a copy. I strongly encourage you to get the word out to interested students as this is a wonderful opportunity for undergraduate students to experience life as a professional psychologist and provide them with amazing networking opportunities. Although it can seem cost prohibitive, many students attend this conference and come up with creative ways to fundraise (using persuasion techniques to increase the success of bake sales, workshops, car washs, asking businesses or your college to match funds, and even crowd source funding like kickstarter.com [1]).
