Psychology Career Day Culminates from Psi Beta – Psi Chi Collaboration Grant

In Spring 2013, the Psi Beta chapter at Cerritos College was awarded a Psi Beta / Psi Chi Collaboration Grant and a Building Bonds Award from Psi Beta for its work with California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). We partnered with the Psi Chi chapter at CSULB to gather insight and knowledge on how to host a local psychology conference, or “Psychology Day.”  Psychology Day is an annual tradition at CSULB in which Psi Chi and the Psychology Student Association (PSA) raise awareness of the field of psychology and showcase student and faculty research in a one-day student-driven interactive conference that includes workshops, poster presentations, and networking opportunities with numerous representatives from graduate schools, and culminates with a keynote address. In addition to providing planning documents on past Psych Day activities, the Psi Chi chapter invited the Psi Beta officers to attend planning meetings held by the executive board to discuss the event’s logistics and best practices. With the valuable information gained by this collaboration and the funding made possible through Psi Beta and the Cerritos College Foundation, we hosted our own Psychology Day in Spring 2014.

The ultimate goal of Psychology Day was to raise awareness of the field of Psychology as a scientific discipline. Undergraduate conferences such as Psychology Day occur often at four-year universities; we had a vision for making this opportunity available at a two-year community college. Students in attendance at Psychology Day 2014 reported “being inspired,” “gaining practical knowledge,” “having fun by getting to know other people,” and “finding out information that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.” It was evident, through evaluation data collected at the end of the event, that students felt more aware of the field of Psychology and that the event was a huge success.

We hosted another Psychology Day conference on April 17th, 2015.
