Fundraising: Lets Make it Happen!

PUTTING THE “FUN” INTO FUNDRAISING!

By Laura J. Bittner, Psi Beta’s National Past-President, Carroll Community College, MD

As a Psi Beta member and/or advisor, you know how tough it can be to raise funds for chapter events.  Whether for scholarship opportunities, service projects, or attendance at conferences, funds are often needed.  Yes, we all have done the car washes and bake sales and, although they can be fun, below are a couple of ideas that often work well and tend to be fun for everyone involved.

Restaurant fundraiser – many of your local restaurants will gladly sponsor a Psi Beta day or night where they will contribute a percentage of their sales that day to your chapter.  All this really takes is asking the restaurant manager, setting up the date, and getting a group of your friends and family and go eat!  Generally the restaurants may want the patrons to provide a flyer with your organization’s name on it in order for you to receive proceeds from the sale of their meal.  At Carroll Community College, we have made flyers, distributed them on campus, had a few members distribute them as folks are going into the restaurant and, before you know it, our proceeds were adding up!   Some popular chain restaurants that generally participate are Applebee’s, Chili’s, Pizza Hut, Chick-fil-a, and Five Guys.  There are others and many non-chain restaurants and pubs will host a fundraiser night.  All you have to do is ask and then have a fun night out.

Another idea that has worked well for our chapter is hosting sales parties such as PartyLite Candles, Longaberger Baskets, Vera Bradley bags, Tastefully Simple,  Gourmet Creations (dips and spreads – Dillicious is my favorite!).  I am sure there are others, but you can host an event and have a consultant from the company come, (many of them are very willing to donate a percentage of sales to your organization), or do it on your own in some cases.  Those you invite sample and order the products and your chapter earns a percentage of the sales.   All you have to do is arrange the event (either at someone’s home or on your campus) with the company consultant and set a date!

Our fundraising efforts have helped to provide funding for our active members to attend regional and national conferences and to give back to the community through service projects.   The ideas above are great because they are very social and fun events where you can gather with your fellow Psi Beta members, family, and friends all while raising funds for your chapter.
