Southwest Regional Vice-President of Psi Beta

On April 14, 2018, the Psi Beta chapter of Hillsborough Community College hosted the first annual Central Florida Psychology Summit in Tampa, FL. The summit brought together students, faculty, practitioners, and others interested in psychology for a day of collaboration and discussion. The summit consisted of various activities, including research presentations, career discussions, poster sessions, and plenary sessions. Highlights of the event included:

• An introduction by former APA President Antonio Puente

• A keynote speech by former Psi Beta National President Kathleen Hughes Stellmach

• A student research poster session and competition

• A student “History of Psychology” poster session sponsored by the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology

• Several “Café Conversation” events where people in the field discussed their educational and career paths with people in the audience

• A closing plenary session by top sports psychologist Harold Shinitzky

The event was a huge success, bringing over 130 participants from more than a dozen colleges and universities together in a relaxed environment designed to encourage interaction. The event resulted in a Psi Beta “Building Bonds” award for HCC’s Psi Beta chapter, and Florida Southern College’s Psi Chi chapter, who worked together (along with many others) to organize the event and make it a success. The 2019 Central Florida Psychology Summit is scheduled for April 6, 2019 at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, FL. The event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to register and attend. For more information, please contact the Executive Director, Todd Joseph (tjoseph13@hccfl.edu).
