Important Information: WPA Convention in Cancun

Attention All Western Region Chapters! WPA Convention in Cancun, Mexico!!!

By Kris Leppien-Christensen, Psi Beta’s Western and Rocky Mt. Regional Vice President, Saddleback Community College, CA

While the Western Psychological Association (WPA) 2010 Convention is approximately six months away, now is the time to start thinking about and making plans for attending this convention.  The 2010 convention will be held in beautiful Cancun, Mexico at the Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun Resort from Thursday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 25th.  And while this is a lovely resort location, extra planning will be necessary, especially if you plan on bringing students.

By now, most of us are aware that all travelers are required to have a passport for international travel.  However, not all students have passports, so now is the time to encourage them to apply for passports or renew their existing ones in preparation for the convention.  Further, if college funds are going to be sought to help defray travel expenses, additional work may be necessary given that international travel is involved.  Thus, now is the time to start planning.  It is also a good time to reserve your hotel rooms to ensure that you are onsite as this will simplify the convention experience.

A tremendous amount of information is already available at for this convention.  Psi Beta also takes an active role in the convention programming by holding a Research Feedback Poster Session along with Psi Chi.  Thus, if you have student researchers in your local clubs, this would be a fabulous opportunity for them to present their research and for them to receive feedback from our colleagues.  I also believe that such experiences foster a desire for completing additional research in the future, and facilitate learning how research is conducted and reported by psychologists.  Presenting research at a professional conference is a great item to add to one’s curriculum vita.

As is customary, Psi Beta will be hosting a Chapter Exchange and Social.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to interact with members from other chapters.  In addition, the Chapter Exchange and Social allows chapters to report on their successes and also allows them to brainstorm with the other chapters about future projects, community service, fundraising, and the like.  Past chapter exchanges have been very successful and we’d like to keep this tradition alive in Cancun.

While there is still time to preregister, please remember that preregistration ends on March 15th; after that, all registrations will need to take place in-person.  Further, if one of your students is a first author of a submitted paper and is a member of WPA, consider having him or her apply for one of the WPA Student Scholarships.
