Collaborative Grants Awarded
The first ever Psi Beta / Psi Chi Collaboration Grants have been awarded. The first grant went to Carroll Community College for a project planned in conjunction with the Psi Chi chapter at the University of Baltimore. The project involved presentation of a collaborative session at the Eastern Psychological Conference in March. The Psi Beta National office has awarded Carroll Community College $500 to offset project expenses. Laura Bittner serves as the primary Psi Beta advisor at Carroll Community College.   (Pictured to the left is the collaboration between Psi Beta and Psi Chi).

The second Collaboration Grant went to Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC). The PHCC chapter facilitated a collaborative project with the Psi Chi chapter at St. Leo University. The project involved increasing awareness of the homeless. Dr. Kathleen Hughes De Sousa is the primary Psi Beta advisor at Pasco-Hernando Community College. Psi Chi has awarded a $500 check to PHCC to offset project expenses. Following the Collaboration Grant guidelines, both Carroll Community College and Pasco-Hernando Community College are automatically entered into the Building Bonds competition for this year. If you have an idea for a Collaboration Grant for your chapter, please see the Psi Beta website for more information.

National Research Project Successful – College connectedness was the theme of this year’s national research project. Over 480 first-semester freshmen students participated in the study. Participating Psi Beta chapters included Cottey Community College, Germanna Community College, Irvine Valley College, Palm Beach State College, Pasco Hernando Community College, San Diego City College, and Spartanburg Methodist College. The study’s data file has been distributed to all participating chapters. Thanks to you all for making this study possible. Next year’s national study will be announced in early fall.

Psi Beta Turns 30! (Contributed by Sheri Chejlyk) – What were you doing 30 years ago? Thirty years! Are we referring to your age? Brad Pitt’s age?  No, we are referring to Psi Beta’s age. This summer we will be celebrating Psi Beta’s 30th anniversary.  A lot of things can happen in 30 years. Hmmmm, let’s see. What was happening 30 years ago? The first space shuttle was launched. Bill Gates said “640K ought to be enough for anybody” (Bill Gates, Chairman, Microsoft, 1981). The motion picture Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark was released, and gas cost around $1.38 per gallon. Flash forward to today where the space shuttle program is coming to an end, there is never enough memory in our computers, and we will view the last in the series of Harry Potter movies. We won’t even mention today’s gas prices! Unlike some endings we will experience this year, Psi Beta is better than ever and continuing move forward. More opportunities are available to student members than ever before! Now is a great time to be a Psi Beta member.  Congratulations on being a Psi Beta member or advisor! Happy Birthday Psi Beta! Please attend the Psi Beta / PT@CC Social and Awards hour this year at APA. We will have Carol Tracy, Psi Beta’s co-founder, on hand to celebrate with us. This is your opportunity to meet a living legend!

Navarro College Chapter Reaches 25 years! – The Psi Beta Chapter at Navarro Community College in Corsicana Texas is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Psi Beta co-founder Carol Tracy will join their spring induction on April 27th and help them celebrate. Congratulations to the Navarro College Chapter!!! Keep up the great work.
