The Pasco-Hernando Community College North Campus Psychology and Psi Beta Clubs, along with BayCare Behavioral Health and the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Hernando chapter, held numerous events on campus for Mental Illness Awareness week during October 4-8, 2010.  The purpose of the week’s events was to bring to light numerous issues facing those afflicting with mental illness and their loved ones.  The week featured authors (Marcie Estes, Stanley Giannet, & Charrie Hazard), presenters, workshops (Wakanheza Project and WRAP), films (Minds on the Edge, Girl Interrupted, When Medicine Got it Wrong, NO Kidding Me 2, and Caring Congregations), student presentations, and depression screenings to educate students, staff, and members of the community on mental health issues. Over 100 individuals participated in on-site depression screenings.  Dr. Kathleen De Sousa, advisor for the PHCC North Campus Psych Club and Psi Beta and the Psi Beta Southeast Regional Vice President of Psi Beta stated that the event was “a great success and I am really proud to have been a part of something so special and relevant. Of course, we are already looking ahead to next year’s MIAW and will work to expand our great programming.”
