Scheduled Events at the American Psychological Association Conference

August 12-15, 2010, San Diego, CA

The annual APA conference will be better than ever this year. This outstanding psychology conference will feature outstanding speakers, lectures, symposia, posters, films, and exhibits. Community college psychology teachers and students will encounter a wealth of information on cutting edge theory and research in psychology, insight into career options in psychology, and abundant networking opportunities.   • Distinguished Lecture – Jeffery S. Mio, Ph.D., Cal Poly, Pomona will deliver the Ruth Hubbard Cousins Distinguished Lecture. His title: Applying the Identity Development Model to My Life: Serendipitous Racism. When and Where: Friday, August 13 at 2 pm in the San Diego Convention Center, Room 28D

  • Effective Teaching Symposium – The theme of Psi Beta’s annual symposium is Strategies the Promote Active Learning. Presenters and topics will be: T.L. Brink of Crafton Hills College: Active Learning Strategies for Online Students; Regan A.R. Gurung, Ph.D. of the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay: Culture Shocks to the System: Getting Students to Actively Face Cultural Diversity; Kimberley Duff, Ph.D., Rosie Miranda, M.A., and Cynthia Munoz of Cerritos College: Behind the Scenes: Getting Students Actively Involved in a Research Methods Course. When and Where: Saturday, August 14 from 11am to 12:50 p.m. in the San Diego Convention Center, Room 33C

  • Psi Beta Student Research and Chapter Poster Session!!! This is a first this year. Students must apply to present though the Psi Beta website or through this web address: http://psibeta.org/site/call-for-posters [2]. The poster registration deadline is June 15, 2010.  Psi Beta chapters are also encouraged to prepare and present a chapter poster that depicts chapter activities that support Psi Beta’s mission: to promote professional development of psychology students in two-year colleges through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research, and community service. Please don’t delay – there will be spaces for only 40 posters! Top posters will receive prizes. When and Where: Saturday, August 14 from 3pm-3:50pm in the San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall ABC.

  • Social Hour and Awards – The annual Psi Beta and PT@CC social hour and awards. Co-chairs: Lillian McMaster, Hudson County Community College and Laura Bittner, Carroll Community College. When and Where: Friday, August 13 from 5pm-6:50pm at the Manchester Grant Hyatt Hotel in the Madeleine Room C and D.
