The President’s Message

Message from the President
Spring Newsletter, 2010

I hope you are having a great spring semester or quarter.  This is always an exciting time of the year for us as we prepare for our annual competitions.  Our awards recognize individual students, chapters and advisors for their research, academic, and leadership efforts.  Visit our website @ http://psibeta.org/site/awards/current-deadlines to learn more about these opportunities.

I am especially excited about the renewal of the Diversity Project 2000 and Beyond program.  This is a leadership program designed to encourage the academic development of traditionally underrepresented ethnic minority students of psychology.  Student members of Psi Beta of African American, Asian American, Native American, or Latino descent are encouraged to apply.  Selected students will be invited to attend a four-day workshop designed to develop leadership and networking skills.  The workshop takes place during the annual APA convention from August 12-15 in San Diego.  Students who are successful applicants will receive APA convention registration and a one-year student membership to APA.  More importantly, they will have the opportunity to experience the APA convention along with other motivated student scholars.  Psi Beta advisors – please encourage your students to apply for this amazing experience. The application deadline for the Diversity Project 2000 and Beyond program is May 1st. For more information and the application form, please visit http://psibeta.org/site/diversity-project-dp2kb.

In other news, Psi Beta’s collaboration with Psi Chi continues.  Our goal is to facilitate the transition of our Psi Beta students to their respective Psi Chi chapter once they transfer to the four-year university and to create educationally enriching opportunities for community college as well as university students.  One example of such collaboration is the annual student-oriented Synergy conference.  The 4th annual Synergy conference this past November was a huge success and our national council is currently working with Psi Chi to make this year’s conference, in Denver, even better.  Look for more details about the next Synergy Conference elsewhere in this newsletter.

Make the best of your remaining school term!  As always, the national council and I are here to make the best of your Psi Beta experience.  Please let us know how we can help.

Fernando Ortiz, Ph.D.
Psi Beta National President
