American Psychological Association (APA) 2019 Convention

Thank you to all students and faculty who attended the annual APA convention in Chicago, Illinois. It was wonderful to see so many students enjoying the conference and great to reconnect with, and meet new, colleagues! Psi Beta sponsored four events over the course of the conference:

1) Psi Beta Student Research Poster Session

2) Ruth Hubbard Cousins Distinguished Lecture – Garth Neufeld: For Innovation’s Sake: Breaking the Unwritten Rule of College Teaching

3) Psi Beta Symposium: Preparing Community College Students for the 21st Century Workforce Paul Hettich, Ph.D., DePaul University: Getting the Jump on Workplace Readiness: Skills, Experiences, Career Choices Harold Takoosian, Ph.D., Fordham University: Student Involvement in International Psychology: Why and How Jaye Van Kirk, MA, San Diego Mesa College: Career Course Helps Psychology Majors Articulate Skills for Workforce

4) Psi Beta/Psi Chi/CABE Reception and Awards

Psi Beta National Council also held their annual business meeting one day prior to APA. During that meeting, the Executive Director went over her goals for the upcoming year and the budget. The council installed new Vice President of the Western Region, Helen Greenbergs, and installed new President of Psi Beta Kimberley Duff. The council spent much of the meeting brainstorming and planning how to reach out to new chapters, provide advisor support, and network with our sister honor’s organizations of Psi Chi and Psi Alpha.

Over 30 awards were presented to students, faculty and chapters. Monetary awards from Pearson Education and the Anne Anastasi foundation were given to Chapter Excellence Award winners and Student Research Award winners. Check out photographs of Psi Beta at the conference posted on the Society for the Teaching of Psychology newsletter [1].
